Alexa.com is an Amazon company and it collects data from websites to give that website rank. Well, today almost every bloggers, website owners or business want their website with good Alexa rank. So it will be really good to know how Alexa website ranking system work so that one can improve the rank of his/her website. For many users Alexa ranking means a lots. Advertisers also like to check Alexa rank of the website before spending money on that website before advertise. So a good Alexa rank is important for those sites.

So how Alexa rank all the sites? In this post I am going to explain you how  Alexa ranking system works or how are Alexa’s traffic rankings determined.

How Alexa Website Ranking System Works?

There are several things Alexa major to rank a website. But the most important is traffic. Yes, website traffic is the most important and  top level priority that Alexa count for giving a website rank. It can be also say that all the other can be ignored and anyone can get the idea about the traffic amount of a website through Alexa rank.

Alexa’s traffic estimates and ranks are based on the browsing behavior of people in our global data panel which is a sample of all internet users. The site ranking of Alexa both are based on a combined measure of Unique Visitors and Pageviews. The unique visitors refers to the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day.  Alexa traffic rank updated daily. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single Pageview.

Alexa traffic ranking system is only for the top level domains and not for any sub domain unless Alexa able to automatically identify them as personal home pages or blogs, like those hosted on sites like Blogger (blogspot.com). If a site is identified as a personal home page or blog, it will have its own Traffic Rank, separate from its host domain.

There is a limit on Alexa depending on the data amount available on Alexa for a site. More closer to rank #1 means more exact statistics for a site on Alexa. Generally there are more data available on a site on Alexa that ranked below #100000.
